Reading a marine forecast

Look beyond the weather icon: wind direction, swell period and visibility shape the actual dive.

Reading a marine forecast

Safety and training

General field notes, not a dive plan. Stay within your training, follow local site rules and the operator’s briefing.

01

Field observation

A calm-looking beach may have surf from a distant storm. Compare the hourly wind with the swell's direction and period; ask the local operator how that combination behaves at the entry.

02

A practical approach

Check the updated forecast on dive day, set a cancellation threshold with your buddy and turn back if conditions differ from the briefing.

Dive-day checklist

Before you go

  • Check local conditions and access rules
  • Agree limits and the exit with your buddy
  • Stop or change the plan if conditions differ

General guidance only. Follow your training, the dive operator’s procedures, and each manufacturer’s current instructions.

Personal guidance for your next dive

Describe a dive scenario or an equipment-care question. The guide answers in your language and points you to relevant journal articles.
